October 25, 2017, Washington, D.C. — Six-year-old Sarah was on the sidelines with two Washington Redskins cheerleaders for her favorite – and first – football game. She also enjoyed a front-row seat to Rep. Steve Scalise, (R-La), giving jerseys saying “thank you” to Crystal Griner and David Bailey.

Sarah with Rep. Steve Scalise, (R-La)Sarah represented Our Military Kids at this year’s Congressional Football Game on October 11 at Hotchkiss Field, Gallaudet University. The game matched the U.S. Capitol Police, team name “The Guards,” against members of Congress on team “The Mean Machine.”

Former NFL players Ken Harvey, John Booty, Gary Clark, Santana Moss and Herschel Walker offered their skills to the game as well.

Our Military Kids, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund, and A Advantage 4 Kids benefited from the family-friendly, bipartisan game.

Our Military Kids provided Sarah with two grants for martial arts lessons while her father recovered from combat-related injuries.

The charity gives grants to the children of deployed National Guard members and reservists and wounded service members. These grants provide access to extracurricular activities, such as sports, the arts, STEM and tutoring.

“The average Our Military Kids grant is $430. The martial art classes or music lessons these grants fund bring hope for a child whose parent is deployed or injured,” says Our Military Kids President Linda Davidson.

“Although The Guards won the game, the real winners are the military families who will benefit from the money raised by the Congressional Football Game. The children will be able to grow and flourish, even during a difficult time. An Our Military Kids grant is a tangible thank you from a grateful nation,” Davidson says.

“We appreciate all who welcomed Sarah at the game. She had an amazing time,” Davidson says. “More than that, we’re grateful to all who advanced our mission by supporting this game.”

Our Military Kids, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting children of deployed National Guard and Military Reserve service members and of wounded warriors. Founded in 2004, the organization has awarded more than $23 million in grants for extracurricular activities. A $329 grant opened the door for 11-year-old Connor to attend Boy Scout camp in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, this summer. Camp was more than a chance to swim, cook and play. It was an opportunity to be a care-free kid while his dad was on a 189-day deployment.

In October 2017, the D.C.-area America’s British Reliability Run raised more than $55,000 for grants to military children like Connor. These funds mean 125 or more children will be able to participate in scouts, dance, soccer, tae kwon do and more.

Antique British Car Run Supports Our Military Kids“Supporting Our Military Kids was a wonderful way to show my gratitude to the Reserves and the National Guard and their families,” says ABRR driver Richard Ryan. A retired 23-year Navy Reservist, Ryan fully understands the toll on military families the last 15 years of engagement has taken.

This reliability run, organized by Jeff Olson with the help of seven other volunteers, was the first of its kind in the D.C. area. The 30 teams of this run eclipsed all previous fundraising records of any other American run, raising three times the previous record.

Olson and seven volunteers spent almost 10 days driving and planning the route. The route ended up as a clover-leaf design, which allowed drivers to participate in just one or two days of the run. This meant more teams were able to participate and more funds to be donated to Our Military Kids.

The reliability-run teams are still accepting donations. Support a team today.  You can specify the name of the team you want to support by typing it in the designation section.
