Congratulations to Ashelyn, 6, from Georgia – the U.S. Air Force WINNER of OMK’s Courageous Kids of 2021 Contest sponsored by Navy Federal Credit Union! 

“At only six years old, Ashelyn has shown courage beyond her years,” said her mother, a U.S. Air Force Veteran in recovery from combat-related injuries. “Her 20-year U.S. Army veteran grandfather developed cancer and underwent surgery in 2022. Once she was aware, her initial sadness brought out an internal courage within her. She began writing Get Well cards, calling him to show support, and preparing the guest room in case he had to stay at the house after surgery.  

“Ashelyn showed compassion and insisted on visiting him during his recovery. She helped him walk around the house to gain strength, brought him food and medicine, refilled his water, and patiently entertained herself while he slept. Her support meant a lot to him and gave him the strength to get well.  

“Ashleyn is proud of her family’s veteran heritage and epitomizes the same core values we gained from the military.  She loves gymnastics, exercising, playing with her dolls, and excelling in school. Her father and I are both U.S. Air Force Veterans who are proud of her courageousness, emotional strength and resilience during these two traumatic events in her life.” 

Ashelyn has received an Our Military Kids grant for tutoring during her mother’s recovery from combat-related injuries. Thank you, Ashelyn + family, for your service!
