Alejandro, Hidden Helper Hero Courageous Kids Contest Winner

Alejandro (14) from Maryland was selected as a Hidden Helper Hero Award winner in the 5th Annual Our Military Kids Courageous Kids Contest. Alejandro is the caregiving child of a U.S. Army/U.S. Marine Corps Veteran in treatment for combat-related injuries.
An avid cyclist, Alejandro aspires to earn a yellow jersey in the Tour de France, a rainbow jersey in downhill racing, and work in recreational and adaptive sports therapy.
“I learned about adaptive sports when my dad had his spinal injury,” Alejandro said. “My brother is also disabled and has a hard time participating in sports. When we learned about adaptive sports, my dad and brother could get out and do every activity my siblings and I did. I want to encourage more sports leagues to have an adaptive component. With modifications, all sports are possible.”

Alejandro was nominated for the contest by family friends, who shared:
“Alejandro comes from a family where both parents are Veterans. His father has many combat-related injuries that ultimately led to his medical retirement. Over the 12 years that I have known the family, Alejandro’s father has had several intensive surgeries and physical therapy cycles. During this time, Alejandro has kept his spirits up and is always supportive of his father and mother and assisting with the recovery process. He jumped in wholeheartedly to help take care of his brother when his mother’s focus had to be directed to his father after surgeries. Alejandro has never complained or let a smile leave his face during these medical trials and tribulations. He has stepped up and taken a leadership role to help run the household responsibilities during his father’s time of recovery.
Alejandro has an avid passion for mountain biking and not wanting to leave his disabled brother or father out of what brings him joy. He has found ways to get them into adaptive sports so that they can do activities as a family. Alejandro regularly volunteers for an adaptive sport group that helps Veterans and their children find a way to live an active lifestyle within their disabilities. He volunteers his time with Free Bikes 4 Kidz, a nonprofit doing mechanical work to help kids keep their bikes running.
Alejandro is also actively involved in supporting the fundraising and advocacy efforts his family makes for disabled Veterans. His family has made many trips to the White House and other public events to show the need for the support of our disabled Veterans.”
“Jandro is an amazing kid who not only is a Hidden Helper for his father and brother but goes above and beyond to help the VA’s Adaptive Sports programs. He volunteers his time to ensure safety and support to other Veterans and staff. Jandro motivates his fellow cycle team to join in his mission of helping our nation’s heroes in their sports and adventure journey. Jandro is a ray of sunshine and light for everyone he serves. Always willing to lend a hand to not just his dad and brother but to anyone who is in need. He leads by example. His positivity is contagious and all who meet him can feel the healing powers he brings.”
“Alejandro has been a steady calm for his mom and siblings when they are struggling. He has been a wonderful example to my own son who is also 14, taking the time to help and be a good friend. Alejandro also won't let me carry anything when I visit. Being a disabled Veteran myself, I appreciate not having to ask for help. He is always right there taking things from my van or my struggling arms so I don't have to strain myself.”
“My advice [to other military kids] is to start doing the things you've always wanted to do with your Veteran parent,” Alejandro said. “Help them discover the world that they may not have been able to enjoy while on duty. Being a Veteran is a part but not all of their identity. My Pa was cool as a Marine and Soldier but became even cooler when he took the uniform off and just got to be Pa every day.”
Throughout their father’s treatment, Alejandro and his siblings have each received Our Military Kids extracurricular activity awards to fund cycling fees, driver’s education classes, and circus camp.
