Ashley, U.S. Navy Veteran Courageous Kids Contest Winner

“It’s really awesome to be a military kid,” Ashley said. “I’m so glad that my mom got to serve in the military and fight for our freedom.”
Ashley (7) from California was selected as the winner of the 5th Annual Our Military Kids Courageous Kids Contest in the U.S. Navy – Combat Injured Veteran category.
Ashley's mother is a U.S. Navy Veteran in treatment for combat-related injuries. During this time, Ashley has persevered in academics and after-school activities, meeting each challenge with positivity and serving as a role model for her younger sister. In the future, Ashley aspires to be the President of the United States so she can support people in underprivileged communities.

Ashley was nominated for the contest by her mother, who shared:
“Ashley has exemplified extraordinary courage, strength, and resilience throughout 2024. During a challenging period when I was recovering from surgery and unable to provide the usual support, Ashley displayed remarkable independence and determination by staying on track with her studies. She was selected by her peers to participate in an interview in which she shared her experiences and prepared to showcase her nationality. Additionally, after two years of perseverance, she was accepted into the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, a testament to her dedication and academic excellence.
She also embraced new challenges, such as learning water safety at swim school. Initially placed at level 4, she has since progressed to level 10, demonstrating her perseverance and commitment.
Ashley’s resilience extends to her martial arts training, to which she has been dedicated for several years. She is now a candidate for promotion to a red belt, an impressive milestone requiring mastery of eight previous belt levels. Despite being smaller than many of her peers—having been born at just 5.2 pounds—Ashley has consistently shown that success is not defined by where one starts, but by the determination to keep moving forward.
Beyond academics and athletics, Ashley is a compassionate and responsible young leader. She actively contributes at home by helping with laundry and assisting her younger sister. She also serves her church community by volunteering in praise and worship during Sunday services and participating in the Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (AWANA) program, where she is learning to share the gospel and develop leadership skills. Ashley’s unwavering determination, dedication to her family and community, and commitment to personal growth make her an outstanding candidate for this award. Her story is one of perseverance, leadership, and resilience, and she continues to inspire those around her with her strength and compassion.”
Ashley’s advice to fellow military kids with a combat-injured parent: “Just love your parent as much as possible.”
Ashley and her sister, Abigail, have each received multiple Our Military Kids extracurricular activity awards to fund swim classes throughout their mother’s treatment for combat-related injuries.
